In 2005 I visited a school in Uganda, called "Childcare Kitgum Servants". The school is for children ravaged by the effects of war, famine and AIDS. When I visited, I was completely moved by the children, their stories and their hope.
Since then, i have developed a passion for supporting men and women who are making a difference in our world.
Steve and Lisa West-Newman have lived in Cambodia for almost six years and in that time they have made a great Impact. Steve works in a rehabilitation centre providing free treatment to Cambodians who cannot afford treatment elsewhere. By providing pain-relieving treatment, Steve gives his patients control of their condition so they can go back to work and support their families.
Steve also provides training for physiotherapists to bring their skill level to that of Australian trained physios, and in doing so, Steve is contributing to a country trying to piece itself back together.
Lisa forms positive relationships with
Cambodians and other Australians living in Phnom Penh,
offering support and compassion which is truly unique. She
also takes care of her and Steve's three children Joel (6),
Emma (4) and Noah (1) in a country where it is considered
good luck to touch a blonde child.
Steve and Lisa are making a wonderful and worthwhile impact
towards the future of Cambodia.
Chenda is a Cambodian physiotherapist who spent time
training with Steve. She now works for an organisation
called Task which is set up to provide care and
education for children with disabilities, especially
Cerebral Palsy. Chenda provides treatment, nutrition
training, schooling and home visits to children who cannot
get to the centre. She has been offered a placement in
Singapore to undergo further physiotherapy training but has
to pay her own way.
I'm keen to raise some money to support Steve and Lisa's
work, and the Chenda's further education. To this end,
Impact One World will be hosting a fundraising
evening, in the
form of a sale of photographic
art. All
proceeds will go directly to Steve, Lisa and Chenda.
